![]() You'll also need proof of residency on top of a lease, such as a utility bill or banking statement (a lease does not count for the full permit). But when moving here you'll need to make sure to have the car registered in MA, garaged to your Somerville address, and properly insured/inspected in MA and at that address. It's relatively easy, but a bit annoying if you live here to get a permit. Is it easy to get a parking pass/permit from the city hall as a renter? ![]() As a I work in the hospital, I am planning to bring my car as it requires me to drive at odd hours on call. Hello guys, I am subleasing a place at Somerville for 2 month in july and august this year. And might not even be there car perhaps if they're a student bringing a family car from out of state, so doubly tricky and annoying to go the permit route. Insurance could be far more expensive for those 2 months in Somerville and such a PIA having to switch things around for such a short time. Costs more (because permits are significantly under charged compared to off street parking rates) but will actually probably net out the same when you factor in changing registration, license, insurance, etc. I would just rent a driveway in the neighborhood off Craigslist. They're extremely a PIA for someone just living here 2 months. These steps are a bit of a PIA for someone who wants to live here full time. And no - a lease doesn't count for a full permit! The Parking department will not give you a full permit unless you have proof. Or change it now so by July you have proof. Again, really easy for an existing resident but what if you just moved here? You need to make sure to immediately switch billing addresses and hope the statement closes soon. Make sure to have "proof of residency" such as a credit card bill/statement, bank statement or utility bill. The Parking Dept will not give you a full permit unless the car is registered to the apartment you have in Somerville. This is important so the City gets its exercise taxes from renters. Make sure the car is "garaged" in Somerville even if they're already registered in MA. But IDK if an insurance company would give sell them insurance without an MA license - so, hmm. I believe legally you're supposed to get an MA license within 60 days or something of moving here but the OP is in a gray area where they're only here for 2 months. Probably need an MA license for all this too, though honestly not sure how strict the state is. And if they already have MA insurance, they still need it to say the right address for the RMV to garage it properly. This is required for a car registered in MA. Likely need to change your insurance or even get insurance if the OP doesn't live in MA but lives in a state like NH where insurance isn't required. The OP wasn't clear on this, so just pointing this out as a step. The State's website here has a good overview: And I may be exeratting with the "it's so much fun" bit but it's definitely going to be a PIA if the OP is just here for 2 months because they will need to register their car again back home unless they already live in MA. Register their car in Massachusetts with the RMV if they're out of state - oh boy is this fun. And especially a PIA if you're just moving here for 2 months! Somerville is very easy to get a permit as an existing resident but oh god do they make it a total PIA for anyone moving here. I think the part you missed is that they're planning on subleasing a place for 2 months.
